Inside the Studio with Claire Lockwood of Something to do

Each week one of our contributors gives you a sneak peek into their studio, creative process or inspirations. We ask a related question of our readers and hope you’ll leave comments! As an incentive, we offer a prize each week to bribe you to use that keyboard and tell us what you think. The following week a winner is chosen at random from all eligible entries.
Congratulations to Carolyn!
You have won a £14 of credit to spend in one of Rebecca’s shops, either Songbead or The Curious Bead Shop!
***********

So, it’s been a very beady old week here. I’ve spent the lion’s share of it with mud on my hands.

As you can see, I’ve been building up these precariously balanced trays of greenware. I’ve been doing a few experiments, like trying applying colour directly onto the unfired clay.

I do hope these colours come through the firing okay – fingers crossed! I’ve also been working on lots of new designs. So, I thought I’d share a selection with you here today.  They’re all waiting to be fired before I can start decorating them any further.
So, that’s what’s been happening in my studio this last week. I’m really looking forward to getting some colour on these. I have lots of new glazes to try!  In some cases I’ve settled on what colours I’ll use but in some cases I’m still unsure. Which brings me to this week’s question. I’m not going to ask you for your favourite colour(!), but I am curious about your favourite colour combinations. Sometimes we get stuck in our ways when it comes to the colours we put together. So, I’m looking forward to hearing other designer’s favourite colour pairings. The prize this week is a good ol’ mystery bundle of beads.
So just comment below, giving your favourite colour combinations, to be in with a chance to win!

I may be quite boring… because give me all shades of green, blue and turquoise and I am in! Summer, ocean, storm, sky, water, growth… there may be a reason why these colours speak to so many including myself 😉

I also love deep purple, intense red, bright orange in any combination… but theblues/greens… especially in glass and ceramic *just sighs*

Btw I love your new designs!

I love seeing some of your work in progress! I like somewhat unusual color combinations that pop. Something like mustard yellow with teal or chartreuse with sky blue.

Those insect forms are so extremely beautiful–I'm hoping I can snatch one. And the experiments with the colours has me intrieged.

I love colour and I love putting unexpected combinations together. I really like to put a pop of colour into a piece, a splash of yellow among blues and greens for example, or a single red bead here and there, some lime green with purple.
Love those new designs, I'm sure the mystery pack will be wonderful!

I love Purple and Green followed by Turquoise and Lime – in fact I use these colour combinations far too much and get frustrated by my tendency to reach straight for these nice comfy colour pairs. I'm on a mission to find some new combinations to stop my shop stock looking a bit dull and same-y colour wise xx

I'm often drawn to cool colours. Deep purple, teal and blue in winter. Lilac and pale green in summer.

I love teal/turquoise with orangey-red… I have lots of variations on this theme. Yet I'm attracted to earth tones in others' creations. Go figure!

I get so jealous when I see your pictures of greenware and the process of clay work. I will get back to it though, soon I hope. I have learned a lot about myself as I make beads and jewelry. I have to say I use a lot of turquoise with the copper or rusty pinks. My personal color pallet is black, cream, or taupe, red, and silver.

My niece moved to Salt Lake City, UT, recently and the pictures she's been posting on Facebook are just stunning. The beautiful blue of the sky combined with sparse white clouds, the reddish tint in the soil and the bright green trees. It's just gorgeous and makes me want to go there.

I love the new beads. I hope they turn out alright. Color combos I like are Purple and gold, Gray and orange, pastel pink with forest green, and hot pink with spring green. I've been out of touch with pink for a long time and am finally becoming comfortable with it again.

I have to go with either teal and orange or turquoise and orange.

I love the blues and greens of nature. They make wonderful colour combinations but really pop when there is an unexpected spot of yellow or orange, especially when it's a bit of a brownish orange, or sunflower yellow

Oh I do hope your beads turn out the way you envision them. Seems I play with all colors..but my favorite color palette is the tranquil colors of the beach…from the various sandy colored beaches to the equally varied blue waters…yum!

Great beads – can't wait to see how they turn out. I like contrasting colour combinations – black with a pop of red, dark blue with bright pink, purple with lime green, ocean blue with orange.

I forgot to mention my favourite color pairings–I like trying everything out at least once–so if it looks like it won't work, I'll try it. But when I look at my work, I see that blues and reds dominate.

I'm in love with teal, lavendar and lime green as a combo. I recently had to update my OS on my cell phone and lo and behold my calendar colors changed to this combo. It made me so happy I openly squealed.

I guess I would sum up that I usually aim for the cooler colors of the spectrum although I do make myself work at the warm end just to shake myself out of ruts.

    Good luck all!!

I'm an earth girl–olive green, rusty brown and bone is one of my favorite combos, as is a muted palette of teal, sage and ivory.

I love Autumn colors but I don't really stick with those colors. A few of the combinations I like are: Brown and pink, Brown and aqua, yellow and brown, cobalt blue and yellow, and a lot of the colors that the other ladies mentioned.
