Inside the Studio with Creative Impressions In Clay

Welcome to Inside the Studio!

Each week one of our contributors gives you a sneak peek into their studio, creative process or inspirations. We ask a related question of our readers and hope you’ll leave comments! As an incentive we offer a free prize each week to bribe you to use that keyboard. The following week we choose a random winner.
Congratulations Meg! You have won a a pair of hand formed ceramic birds from Mary Harding.
Please send Mary an e-mail with your information.

Twist and Shout…Jump, Jive and Wail! It’s 50’s inspired buttons.

My favorite wholesale customer needed buttons for an new line of spring clothing. Its always so much fun when she calls. We catch up, then get to work.
I love collaborating on projects. Creative minds getting together and throwing out ideas. In the end, I get to do what I do with a closing line of “I trust you.”
What more could you ask for to create new designs and the client leaves it up to you?! We discuss the theme, colors (which I match with glazes), quantities and how many different designs are needed.

I was sent rough sketches that were going to be used for painted patches. She said 3 designs, I made 6. Everyone likes choices! Of the 6 designs 5 were chosen.
When designing new buttons I find reference photos, combine images, stylize the image, then decide what will look good in a 1.25″ space. Not everything translates well going that small.

I make sketches and sometimes I create an Illustrator image for cleaner lines. Prototypes are carved out of clay then a plaster mold is made. You can make small changes in the plaster by carving into it or fill in with liquid plaster if bubbles occur.

The design that didn’t make the cut. A Poodle Skirt. It needed work. I may fix it or it will just sit on the shelf.

Group photo with all the different color that were used.
Button Designs; Car, 45 Record, The King, Bowl and a Saddle Shoe Buttons

I do like to collaborate. I am taking baby steps since I am just starting to make my own components. I had a giveaway of some natural brass compasses and sponsored a blog hop where we showed what we came up with. I offered support in the form of tutorial blogs for these who needed it.

I love collaborating with others on projects, the prospects, the ideas shared are very exciting. Mostly having someone else who gets what I'm talking about and gets as excited as I do is great fun. I just love your buttons and the king is well, the king!

I love the bowling button. Where can I find some?

I work with a fellow beader who gives me suggestions on what beads or spacers go together. Sometimes I go with her suggestions, sometimes I don't.
