Studio Saturday-Givin’ You Some Lip!

Welcome to Studio Saturday! Each week one of our contributors gives you a sneak peek into their studio, creative process or inspirations. We ask a related question of our readers and hope you’ll leave comments! As an incentive we offer a free prize each week to bribe you to use that keyboard. The following week we choose a random winner.
This weeks winner is Marian Hertzog. Congratulations!
You have won a a pendant from Jennifer Heynen of Jangles
Send Jennifer an e-mail with your address and she will get it right out to you.

This week we visit the studio of Tari Sasser at Creative Impressions In Clay.
It’s that time of year the Valentine hearts and sentiments. This year I decided to participate by giving everyone “some lip.” The red pair reminds me of “The Rocky Horror” lips. Who can forget those?
These were created from a mold I have of my daughter’s face. (Ooh science fiction) They have loops on both corners the mouth so you can make a fun necklace. (It’s just a jump to left then a step to the right)
I had every intention of making a necklace for Studio Saturday but you would still be waiting till my next Studio Saturday to see it. My decision making process was slowed by my lack of coffee this morning. Instead I thought I would show you what I was thinking about using. I have this fun Crepe Cord and copper chain from Ornamentea. Buttons in various colors and size from my different collections + 2 Elaine Ray beads she had sent me a year ago or so.
I was having a tough time with the visualization in my head to the execution, along with stiff fingers this morning that didn’t want to work.
I had to use picnik.com to alter the photo. Heather has urged us all to use it so I had to give it a try! I used the effects of Focal Soften, Matte and 1960’s. It was fun and a lot quicker than me using Photoshop. I guess I could of tried making a video to make the lips talk but that would have sent you into a “time warp,” “dammit Janet!”
My question this week is:
Do you have a hard time with your designs going from visualization to execution? Occasionally? More often that you care to admit? Never?
Leave your comment and I will give you some lip…a pair of the lips shown above, that is.
Feeling sassy as usual!

I do NOT have a visual mind! It is the bane of my life….so I don't really ever visualise things beforehand, I just play with what's in front of me! I find the beads themselves are the inspiration.

How fun are those lips! They remind me of the wax lips when I was young.

I have loads of visions, but for some reason they get all jumbled up when trying to put it on paper. I envy those who can envision a design and make it happen.

I do have trouble with getting what is in my head to come out right. Too often I am disappointed with the final product. But with jewelry, I can take it apart and try again.

Occasionally something comes out just like I envisioned it, but much more often, NOT. Beads end up not matching each other, or the wrong size, etc. I do better to start with a very rough idea and then just START without too much planning.

sometimes what I am envisioning comes out just perfect other times I have to take it all apart and start over.

Actually, I still have a lot of trouble putting what I think I want in to reality! It's still early days for me in jewelry making and my ideas are probably beyond my capabilities!
I find I need to browse for inspiration and then have a play to see if I can adapt, simplify and make things work! I don't find it easy but I'm having fun trying!

I often have pieces turn out like I envision them but sometimes I have to take them all apart and start over. Sometimes they never go together and I just put all the pieces away. I love Rocky Horror-sometimes I put it on loud on the car stereo and sing along-loud 🙂

Very cool lips – I'd love to see a Rocky Horror inspired necklace, come to think of it (I'll be waiting in antici…….pation *G*)

What I see in my head, what I sketch out, and what I end up with are always very different for some reason; probably because my mind and pen are not bound to the laws of physics like my tools and wire are *G*

yes! I get so frustrated when the beautiful thing in my head can not be born through my hands… but when it does happen, I'm always thrilled and grateful.

    Love those lips!!

I don't try to visualize anything,it doesn't work for me.I put pieces down, kinda like a jigsaw puzzle, and move them on the board until I'm happy with the results. This takes alot of time, sometime, days. But once I like what I see,it's just a matter of putting them all together and that is the easy part.

I would be in the "more often than I care to admit" category for creation. Sometimes my head becomes so full it freezes like a computer page. Sometimes I just have to pick something, anything up from my work table to start the process.

Loving your lips and "Let's do the Time Warp, again".

    Hi tari,
LOVE the lips! I start out with all the beads and stuff that I would like to see in a piece and then have to see what plays well together. If it doesn't fit in, out it goes.

I'd love to win some lips!

Tari, you have no idea how wild my work table appears. Many times my 'visualization' of a new project comes from me staring at the mess!

Let's see… for work stuff, I am better at coming up with a reasonable guess and design and pieces usually turn out. There is a discipline there that doesn't have a lot of room for play.

The more creative play pieces I would say are half and half. They turn out similar to my sketch or they don't. Sometimes they work just the way they are, sometimes they get taken apart. I do try to not take it to heart if the fun stuff doesn't work.

I absolutely have to draw things 1st, because I am visual but really can't visualize until I see it….after that, the real fun starts, as I create something that is usually different than what I imagined….ahhhh, reality 🙂

I definitely do!! I can dream up the most wonderful art (especially late at night), but then in the cold light of day–I wonder what was I thinking. Sometimes I try to do one of these dream projects-and they don't always turn out the way they looked in my dreams. Maybe I just need to keep trying.

I almost always have a plan and it tends to be fluid…changing and evolving as I work with it. And sometimes I just lay beads out on my work table, shift them around every time I pass the table and eventually they fall into something I can put together. On a few occasions I've put them all away and started over!I have to be having fun or it becomes work for me and then nothing goes right!!! LOVE those lips!!

I'm kind of in the "more often than I care to admit". Well actually, by the time I declare a project finished, I'm usually happy with it, but it often takes me longer than I had hoped, or I run into technical difficulties I hadn't anticipated.

I have currently been going through a block. I have several wire wrapped pieces waiting to be assembled but I can't get the right feel for the whole piece yet. I am connecting one here and then another a day or two later. Then I changed how one piece was connected for the better. Some pieces just take a while. In the past I have cleared out my bead tray in an attempt to clear the fog from my creativity. It has worked in the past.

Not while doing the finish jewelry- but in the metal working stage, often, because I am still learning as I go.

I tend to also be in the "more times than I care to admit" category….I always have to make a prototype first, then I get into the flow of things.
Love the lips and buttons and ALL the lovely pretties in the pic

About 80% of the time I have no idea what my necklace, bracelet, ring, or earrings are going to look like until they are done. As I work the pattern it will change as I go. Sometimes for the good and sometime, well I'm not sure. lol But for the most part my piece always comes out looking great to sell. Very seldom do I have to take it all apart and start over but it has been done more then I like to admit. lol I try to keep a sense of humor about the pieces that don't quit make it to the sales table.

The pair of lips will make a wonderfully playful pair of earrings. with a few seed beads I think it will be very cute and easy to sell.

What a great question to ask. Makes you think about what you are doing right and wrong. Thank you for keeping me on my toes.

I have trouble visualizing designs before I start actually making the piece. I'll look through my stash, to find something to inspire me. Once I've located my "favorite right now" bead, I'll start. The picture comes into focus as I put the piece together.
Thanks for the chance to win your sassy lips!!
